Another example is a tachinid fly, which may lay its eggs on another insect; when the larva hatches, it enters the host and develops there.
Because parasitoids are often specialized to attack particular pests, they are widely used in biological pest control, which can reduce the need for chemical pesticides. Farmers may release parasitoid wasps into fields or greenhouses to help control harmful caterpillars, aphids, and other crop pests. So, although the idea can sound unsettling, parasitoids play an important role in ecosystems and can be valuable allies in agriculture.
