Paraformaldehyde (often abbreviated as PFA) is a solid polymeric form of formaldehyde ($[\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{O}]_{n}$). Don't let the chemistry scare you! Think of it as a way to deliver formaldehyde in a safer and easier-to-handle package. Formaldehyde itself is a gas at room temperature, making it tricky to work with in its raw state. Paraformaldehyde is a white, crystalline powder that releases formaldehyde gas when heated; this makes it incredibly versatile for various scientific applications.

Historically, paraformaldehyde was developed as a more stable alternative to liquid formaldehyde solutions. It's widely used in histology (the study of tissues) as a fixative—essentially "pausing" biological samples so scientists can examine them under a microscope without decay. Veterinarians use it for disinfecting equipment and preserving specimens, while taxidermists rely on it in specialized powders to preserve animal hides.
