Vaccines such as Gardasil 9 are highly effective at preventing infection from several high-risk HPV types, which greatly lowers the risk of these cancers. Regular screening, such as Pap tests, can also detect early cell changes caused by the virus, allowing treatment before cancer develops.
Overall, a papillomavirus is usually linked with harmless warts, but some types can create serious long-term risks. The word therefore covers both a common everyday infection and an important medical concern, especially now that vaccination and screening can prevent many of the worst outcomes.
