The word "paly" is an old and uncommon adjective. Most often, it describes something pale, wan, or lacking strong color. In poems, plays, and older prose, it often carries more than a simple color meaning. It can suggest weakness, coldness, fear, illness, or a ghostly kind of light. A paly face may look drained after a shock. A paly flame or sky may seem dim, thin, or washed out rather than bright and full of life.

There is also a technical heraldic meaning. In that setting, paly describes a shield divided into vertical stripes, usually of equal width and alternating colors. That meaning is separate from the literary sense, though both are old-fashioned and mostly seen in special contexts.
