palimony

"Palimony" is a portmanteau, a blend of "pal" and "alimony," referring to financial support claimed by a person who was not legally married to their former partner after the end of a cohabiting relationship. The term became widely known in the 1970s during the landmark Marvin v. Marvin case. That case involved actor Lee Marvin and his companion Michelle Triola. Although Triola did not ultimately win palimony, the case helped establish that unmarried partners could, in some situations, sue based on express or implied contracts.

Unlike alimony, which can arise as part of a legal divorce, palimony is not automatic. Its enforceability varies greatly depending on state or regional law and on whether there is a written agreement. Some jurisdictions may recognize implied contracts based on the couple's conduct or spoken promises, while others require clearer and more formal proof, often in the form of a cohabitation agreement.

These agreements may spell out how property will be divided and whether one partner will continue supporting the other after the relationship ends. When courts do consider this kind of claim, they may look at the length of the relationship, the contributions made by each partner, and any clear promises about financial support or shared assets.

Palimony cases are often complex because they deal with serious financial questions outside the usual rules of marriage and divorce. The idea reflects a broader social reality: many couples build long, committed lives together without marrying, and when those relationships end, disputes over money and promises can still be very real. So while the word may sound playful, it refers to a serious legal and financial issue.
