packrat

The word "packrat" describes a person who saves and stores too many things, often letting clutter build up over time. It usually refers to someone who keeps objects that other people would throw away, such as old papers, empty boxes, worn-out clothes, spare parts, or random household items. A packrat often thinks, "I might need this someday," and that idea makes it hard to part with things.

The term comes from the pack rat, a real rodent in North America that gathers many objects for its nest. People noticed this habit and began using the animal's name for humans who do something similar with their belongings. Because of that origin, the word has a vivid, story-like feel: you can almost see someone building a little nest out of saved objects.

In everyday English, "packrat" is often used in a light or teasing way. Someone might say, "My dad is a real packrat," meaning he keeps every receipt, tool, cable, or jar he has ever owned. It is different from being a collector, because a collector usually focuses on one kind of item, while a packrat saves things more broadly and less neatly.

Sometimes the word can point to a more serious problem if the clutter becomes extreme, but very often it simply means a person who hates throwing things away. So while many people have one messy drawer of saved odds and ends, a true packrat may have whole shelves, closets, or rooms full of things kept for no clear reason except that they are hard to give up.
