The word "overmantel" refers to an architectural feature: the decorative structure or treatment above a mantelpiece. While many people are familiar with the mantel itself, usually the shelf above a fireplace, the overmantel is the part that rises beyond it and helps make the fireplace wall a focal point in the room.

Historically, overmantels were often richly decorated, especially in large or fashionable houses. They could include carved wood, painted panels, plasterwork, and, very often, mirrors. In the 17th and 18th centuries, detailed carving and painted scenes were common choices. Later, the overmantel mirror became especially popular because it reflected light and made rooms feel larger and brighter. In some interiors, the design also helped cover or soften the heavy look of the chimney breast.

Today, while still mainly decorative, overmantels can take many forms. You might see a mirror, a painting, carved details, paneling, or another designed surface in the space above the mantelpiece. They are especially common in period homes, such as Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian houses, but modern interiors can use them too. So, when a fireplace seems to continue upward with a clear decorative design above the shelf, that upper feature is the overmantel.
