The word "outrider" paints a picture of someone who rides outside the main body of travelers, moving ahead or along the sides rather than staying in the middle. Historically, an outrider was often a mounted escort for a carriage, coach, army unit, or important traveler. The rider's job could include scouting the road, guarding the group, carrying messages, and helping the main party move safely through uncertain ground.

The term is strongly linked to times when travel by horse was common, so it often appears in historical writing, western stories, military history, and descriptions of royal or formal processions. In modern use, it can still describe mounted escorts in ceremonies, but it is also used for motorcycle police who ride beside or ahead of a motorcade to protect it and clear traffic.
