Osteoporosis isn't just about having "weak bones" - it's a disease that changes the structure of your skeletal system. Our bodies are constantly rebuilding bone tissue, breaking down old bone and creating new bone. Osteoporosis happens when this process gets out of balance: bone breaks down faster than the body can replace it. This leads to lower bone density, which means the bones become thinner and more porous, more like a honeycomb than solid rock.

The word itself comes from Greek roots: "osteo" meaning bone, and "porosis" meaning porous. So literally, it means "porous bone." While it is often linked with aging, osteoporosis can affect people of all ages, though the risk rises a lot after menopause because of hormonal changes. Genetics, diet, especially calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, and certain medical conditions or medicines also play a part.

Symptoms are often subtle: a gradual loss of height, a stooped posture, or bones that break easily. Fractures most commonly happen in the hip, spine, and wrist. Diagnosis is usually made with a bone density scan.

Fortunately, osteoporosis isn't inevitable. Lifestyle changes like getting enough calcium and vitamin D, doing regular weight-bearing exercise, and avoiding smoking can help prevent it. There are also medicines that can slow bone loss or even help build new bone. So while it's a serious condition, understanding it is the first step toward protecting your skeletal health for years to come.
