osmium

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈɒzmiəm/

US

  • /ˈɑzmiəm/

Description

Osmium is an incredibly dense, bluish-white metal, often described as the densest naturally occurring element on Earth. It belongs to the platinum group metals and is not usually found in pure form in nature; instead, it is found with other platinum group minerals. Because it is very hard and has a high melting point, it is often mixed with metals like iridium to make strong, wear-resistant alloys. These have been used in things like electrical contacts, fountain pen tips, and instrument parts. It is a bit of a hidden hero: people are more likely to come across products that contain it than the pure metal itself.
