Orientalism is a complex term popularized by scholar Edward Said in his influential 1978 book of the same name. It refers to the way Western cultures have historically represented "the Orient," a broad and imprecise term that has been used for the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It is not just about inaccurate depictions; it is a systematic framework of thought that constructs the East as fundamentally different from, and often inferior to, the West.

Said argued that this construction was never neutral or objective. Instead, Orientalism served Western political interests by justifying colonialism, reinforcing power imbalances, and creating an "Other" against which Western identity could be defined as "rational" and "civilized." The "Orient" was often portrayed as exotic, mysterious, sensual, and backward—characteristics used to legitimize Western intervention and control.

Orientalist representations appear in many forms: literature, art, film, academic studies, and even everyday language. Examples include the stereotypical depictions of belly dancers, sheikhs, or "mystical" gurus. These aren't necessarily entirely fabricated images, but they are often presented without nuance, historical context, or respect for cultural complexity. They reduce vast, diverse civilizations to a few easily digestible and often sensationalized tropes.

It is important to note that the term "Oriental" itself is now considered outdated and offensive in many contexts due to its colonial baggage. Today, scholars prefer specific regional terms like "Middle Eastern studies" or "Asian studies." However, understanding Orientalism remains crucial for critically analyzing how Western representations have shaped our perceptions of non-Western cultures and the lasting impact those power structures have on global relations today.
