At puberty, with each menstrual cycle, usually one primary oocyte completes meiosis I, becoming a secondary oocyte and a smaller polar body, which usually breaks down. The secondary oocyte begins meiosis II, but again pauses, this time awaiting fertilization by a sperm cell. If fertilization occurs, the secondary oocyte completes meiosis II, forming a mature ovum (egg) and another polar body. If no fertilization happens, the secondary oocyte does not complete meiosis II and eventually breaks down.
This process isn't just about division; it involves significant growth and accumulation of nutrients within the developing egg to support a potential embryo. Oogenesis is tightly regulated by hormones like estrogen and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
