oligomer

The word oligomer comes from Greek roots meaning "few parts." It describes a molecule composed of a small number of repeating structural units, called monomers. Think of it as a stepping stone between a monomer (a single unit) and a polymer (a long chain of many units). While polymers can have hundreds or thousands of monomers linked together, oligomers typically contain only 2 to 50.

This distinction is important in several scientific fields. In chemistry, understanding the formation of oligomers, a process called oligomerization, helps scientists control reactions and create molecules with useful properties. In biology, some proteins naturally form oligomers in order to do their jobs, and changes in this process can matter in disease research and drug development.
