octreotide

Octreotide is a synthetic peptide, meaning a lab-made short chain of amino acids, that mimics somatostatin, a natural hormone in the human body. Somatostatin helps regulate growth hormone release, the secretion of several other hormones, and many digestive processes. Octreotide is used when doctors want to reduce those signals in a controlled way.

One major use is in acromegaly, a condition caused by too much growth hormone. Octreotide lowers the release of growth hormone and related signals, which helps control symptoms and improve hormone levels. It manages the condition rather than curing its cause.

Another important use is in neuroendocrine tumors, especially functional tumors that release hormones and cause symptoms such as flushing or severe diarrhea, as in carcinoid syndrome or VIPoma. In these cases, octreotide can reduce hormone secretion and relieve symptoms. In some patients, it may also help slow tumor growth, but its main role is symptom control and hormone suppression rather than directly destroying the tumor.

It is also used for certain kinds of severe diarrhea and for emergency treatment of bleeding from esophageal varices, which are enlarged veins in the esophagus that can bleed heavily, often in people with serious liver disease. In that setting, octreotide helps by reducing blood flow in the relevant vessels.

Octreotide is usually given by injection, either under the skin or as a long-acting shot into a muscle. Because it affects hormones and digestion, it can cause side effects such as stomach upset, gallstones, or changes in blood sugar, so medical monitoring is important. Even so, for many people with hormone-related disorders, it is a valuable medicine that quiets harmful chemical signals and makes daily life more manageable.
