Obtuseness refers to the quality of being slow to understand or notice things; it is a lack of mental sharpness or sensitivity. It is more than simply not knowing something. It suggests difficulty with nuances, subtle hints, and indirect meanings. A person may be unaware of a fact through ignorance, but a person showing obtuseness has trouble grasping what is in front of them, even when it is explained clearly.

You might meet this quality in many contexts. A politician avoiding a direct answer could be accused of "deliberate obtuseness," meaning they are intentionally acting as if they do not understand. In literature, a character who shows obtuseness often provides comic relief or makes other characters seem sharper. For example, a character who misses obvious romantic signals might be described as showing "painful obtuseness."

The word is usually critical. It can describe genuine slowness in understanding, but it can also suggest stubbornness or an unwillingness to see what is obvious. It is close to dullness or stupidity in everyday use, though it often points more directly to slow understanding than to low intelligence in general.

Think of trying to explain irony to someone who takes everything literally: they miss the signals that show the speaker does not mean the words in a direct way. Or think of someone who keeps pretending not to understand a simple point in an argument. In both cases, the word fits the sense of being dull to meaning, slow to catch on, or resistant to what should be clear.
