nuclease

A nuclease is an enzyme that cleaves, or cuts, nucleic acids: the molecules DNA and RNA that carry genetic information. The name points to nucleic acids themselves, and "-ase" tells you it is an enzyme. But these enzymes are not all the same; they come in many forms and do many different jobs.

Some nucleases are endonucleases, meaning they cut within the nucleic acid chain. Others are exonucleases, which chop off nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA/RNA) one by one from the ends. Some are highly specific, recognizing and cutting only at certain sequences of bases (like restriction enzymes used in genetic engineering), while others are more general, breaking down any nucleic acid they encounter.

You might not think about it often, but nucleases are essential for life. They help with DNA repair, DNA replication, RNA processing, and the recycling of old or damaged genetic material. Cells also use them as part of defense systems and quality-control systems. During programmed cell death, or apoptosis, nuclease activity helps break down the genetic material of dying cells.

In biotechnology, nucleases are indispensable tools. Restriction enzymes—a type of endonuclease—allow scientists to cut DNA at precise locations for cloning genes or creating genetically modified organisms. Other nucleases are used in research to degrade unwanted RNA or DNA during experiments.

So, from maintaining our health to powering scientific breakthroughs, nucleases are the unsung heroes quietly working behind the scenes to manage and manipulate the very code of life.
