northbound

C2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /nˈɔːθbaʊnd/

US

  • /ˈnɔrθbaʊnd/

Description

"Northbound" describes movement toward the north. Think of it like a sign on a highway: if you see "northbound I-5," it means that side of the road goes north. A train can be northbound, and a traffic report might say the northbound lanes are crowded. You would not usually use it for someone unless they were actively traveling in that direction. You can also picture birds returning north in the spring and describe them that way.
