nor

"Nor" is a coordinating conjunction used to connect two negative ideas, showing that the second idea is also not true. It is best known in the pair "neither ... nor ...," but it can also come after a negative statement, as in "She doesn't like coffee, nor does she enjoy tea." You can think of it as a bridge from one negative idea to another.

It is not simply the same as "and." While "and" joins ideas in a general way, "nor" specifically links negative ones. After it, English often uses inverted word order. For example: "She doesn't like coffee, nor does she enjoy tea." Notice how the order changes to "does she" instead of "she does." That pattern is common when "nor" introduces a new clause.

It also appears in shorter replies such as "Nor do I" or "Nor can he." In this use, it means something like "and the same negative thing is true here." The word often has a slightly formal tone, so it is common in careful writing, literature, and speeches, though it still appears in everyday English.

You will often see it with auxiliary verbs such as "do," "have," and "be": "I haven't seen him, nor have I heard from him." In many sentences, "or" is used with "not" instead, as in "He does not smoke or drink," so "nor" is not needed in every negative sentence. But when you want to connect two negative ideas clearly, especially in a balanced or slightly formal way, "nor" is the right choice.
