Nondisjunction is a fascinating, yet sometimes problematic, event in cell division. It refers to the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate properly during meiosis (the process that creates sex cells—eggs and sperm) or mitosis (cell division for growth and repair). Think of it like this: when cells divide, they need to distribute their genetic material equally to each new cell. Nondisjunction throws a wrench in that system.

During normal meiosis, chromosome pairs separate, ensuring each egg or sperm gets exactly one copy of each chromosome. However, if nondisjunction occurs, both chromosomes from a pair might end up in the same daughter cell, leaving another daughter cell with no copies at all. This results in gametes (sex cells) with an abnormal number of chromosomes—either too many or too few.

When these gametes participate in fertilization, the resulting zygote (fertilized egg) will also have an incorrect chromosome number. This condition is called aneuploidy and can lead to various genetic disorders. Down syndrome (trisomy 21—having three copies of chromosome 21), Turner syndrome (monosomy X—females with only one X chromosome), and Klinefelter syndrome (XXY—males with an extra X chromosome) are all examples of conditions caused by nondisjunction.

Research shows that nondisjunction becomes more common as a person ages, particularly during the production of eggs. While it can also happen during mitosis in regular body cells, the effects are usually limited to the cells that come from that mistake and are not passed on to the next generation through reproduction. Ultimately, while cell division is generally a precise process, nondisjunction highlights how even small mechanical errors in a cell can lead to major genetic changes.
