nightlight

Pronunciation

UK

  • /nˈaɪtlaɪt/

US

  • /ˈnaɪtˌlaɪt/noun

Description

A nightlight is a small light that stays on at night. It gives off a soft glow that helps a room feel less dark and makes people feel more at ease. Many people use one in a child's bedroom, but adults use them too.

It is also useful in a hallway, bathroom, or near stairs, where a little light can help someone walk safely without turning on a bright lamp. Some turn on by themselves when the room gets dark. In everyday life, it is both a comfort light and a practical one.
