The word "nigger" is an extremely offensive racial slur aimed at Black people. It was used for centuries to insult, threaten, and dehumanize people, especially in the context of slavery, segregation, and racism in the United States. Because of that history, the word carries deep pain and is widely seen as hateful. In some cases, it may appear in history, literature, or direct quotation, and some Black speakers have used a reclaimed form in limited in-group settings, but outside those contexts it is strongly offensive and should generally be avoided.

The history of the word "nigger" is closely tied to slavery in the United States and to anti-Black racism more broadly. During the transatlantic slave trade and the long years of slavery and segregation, it was used as a tool of contempt, dominance, and dehumanization. It was not simply an insult. It helped express and reinforce a social order that treated Black people as less than fully human and was used alongside violence, exclusion, and the denial of basic rights. Over time, the word became one of the clearest verbal symbols of racist hatred.

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the term continued to appear in racist speech, threats, propaganda, and acts of intimidation. For many people, it still calls up the history of lynching, segregation, humiliation, and lasting trauma. In more recent decades, there has also been debate about partial reclamation of the word within some Black communities, especially in music and informal speech. In those settings, speakers may try to change its force or meaning inside a shared cultural context. Even so, that limited use does not make the word neutral or broadly acceptable.

Even within Black communities, its use remains controversial, and many people reject it completely. The force of the word depends heavily on who says it, in what setting, and for what purpose. In education, journalism, literature, or historical discussion, it may be mentioned or quoted to explain the past or report language accurately, but even then it is often censored or handled with care because of its severity. In ordinary speech, especially as an insult, it is among the most offensive words in English. It is best understood not as casual bad language, but as a word loaded with a long history of racial hatred and abuse.
