A newsgroup is a discussion forum hosted on Usenet, an older internet system that existed before the World Wide Web as we know it today. Think of it like a bulletin board system (BBS), but spread across many servers around the world instead of living on just one site. Before modern web forums and social media took over, newsgroups were one of the main places where people found information and connected with others who shared their interests.

Originally, newsgroups were organized into clear hierarchical categories, which is why they have names like alt.fan.pratchett (alternative topics, fans of Terry Pratchett) or sci.physics (science, physics). These hierarchies allowed users to easily navigate thousands of groups to find the specific community relevant to their interests.

Unlike modern forums, where you usually interact through a web browser and a personal account, newsgroups were traditionally accessed through a "newsreader" program. This software would download articles from a server for you to read; you would then reply by sending your message back to the server, which would distribute it to other synchronized servers in the network. Because of this setup, discussions could grow quickly and reach people in many places.

While their popularity has faded with the rise of more user-friendly, image-heavy platforms, newsgroups still exist today. They are often maintained by dedicated communities built around technical, academic, or hobby interests. They remain an important piece of internet history and show how people have long used technology to connect and share information.
