The word "neve" (often spelled névé and pronounced nay-VAY) originates from the French and Italian roots for "snow", but in the world of science and mountaineering, it describes a very specific stage in the lifecycle of ice. It is definitely not the light, fluffy stuff used to build snowmen. Neve is the result of a process where snow survives a full melt season, becoming granular and dense through a cycle of melting and refreezing.

In high-altitude regions where temperatures hover near freezing, fresh snow is warmed by the sun or wind, causing the delicate crystals to melt slightly and lose their "fluffy" shape. When temperatures drop, this moisture refreezes, bonding the grains into a much harder, heavier substance. As more layers pile on top, the weight compresses the neve even further. Over time, it becomes denser and denser until it turns into solid glacial ice. In many contexts, névé is used for the same stage that is also called firn.

Neve is the lifeblood of glaciers; without this persistent accumulation, glaciers would simply melt away. It is typically found above the snowline, clinging to the shadows of peaks and filling high basins. Glaciologists study neve to track the health of our planet's "icy giants", because its depth and density help show whether a glacier is growing or retreating due to climate change. It is a quiet, persistent presence on the mountain: the heavy, crunching foundation of some of the world's largest ice structures.
