Imagine the nervous system as a city under construction. During embryonic development, these cells arise from early precursor cells in the neural tube and, in some parts of the body, the neural crest. They often divide rapidly and migrate, moving to the right places within the developing nervous system. Once they arrive, they mature further, growing axons and dendrites and forming the connections that allow nerve cells to communicate with one another. This process is essential for building the networks that support thought, movement, sensation, and many other functions.
The term "neuroblast" is also important in medicine because of a cancer called neuroblastoma. This tumor develops when immature nerve cells, usually in the sympathetic nervous system, do not mature normally and instead keep multiplying. These tumors often appear in the adrenal glands or in nerve tissue in the abdomen or chest. Because neuroblastoma is most common in very young children, research on neuroblasts is important for improving diagnosis and treatment.
