Neurobiology is the scientific study of the nervous system. That includes the brain, the spinal cord, nerves throughout the body, and the cells and signals that let them work. It asks not only what the nervous system does, but how it does it, from the molecular level to behavior. In that sense, it is about both structure and function: how nerve cells are built, how they communicate, and how those processes lead to sensation, movement, emotion, memory, and thought.

The field includes many areas of study. Molecular neurobiology looks at the genes, proteins, and chemical signals involved in nerve cells. Cellular neurobiology studies how neurons grow, connect, and send information. Other branches examine systems in the brain and body that control vision, pain, sleep, language, memory, and behavior.

You'll encounter "neurobiology" most often in university courses, research papers, and scientific writing. It is central to understanding conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression, and many other disorders that affect the brain or nervous system. It also supports work in psychology, pharmacology, rehabilitation, and learning research.

People sometimes use the word loosely as if it only meant "brain science," but neurobiology is more exact than that. It refers to the biology of the nervous system as a whole, often with a strong focus on cells, signals, and physical processes. Whether the goal is to explain consciousness, map brain circuits, or develop better treatments for brain injury and disease, neurobiology remains a key part of modern science.
