Neoliberalism is a broad and often debated set of economic and political ideas that became especially influential in the late 20th century. It grew in part as a reaction against post-war economic models that gave the state a larger role in managing the economy. It is not just a general belief in "free markets." More specifically, it is an approach that favors competition, private enterprise, and a smaller role for the government in many areas of economic life.

At its core, it argues that state intervention in the economy should usually be limited. In practice, this can mean privatizing state-owned companies or public services, reducing rules on businesses, cutting some forms of public spending, and supporting free trade. The hope behind these policies is that they will encourage investment, competition, and economic growth.

However, the term is often used critically. Opponents argue that these ideas and policies can lead to greater income inequality, weaker social safety nets, pressure on public services, and environmental harm. Some critics also point to events such as the 2008 financial crisis as examples of the dangers of too little regulation.

The word itself is somewhat contested. Some scholars debate exactly how it should be defined and whether it describes today's economies in a clear and consistent way. It appears often in academic writing, political commentary, and activism, especially in discussions of globalization, austerity, privatization, and modern capitalism.

So, the term usually points to a market-centered view of society: more room for private business, less direct state control, and trust in competition as a guiding force. For some people, that means freedom and growth. For others, it means insecurity and inequality. That tension is why the word still carries so much debate.
