neocortex

The neocortex is the outer layer of the cerebral cortex in mammals and is closely linked to higher-level brain functions. The name comes from "neo," meaning new, and "cortex," meaning outer layer. It is called "new" because it is a more recent part of the brain in evolutionary terms, especially when compared with older brain structures. In mammals, and especially in humans, it is highly developed and supports many of the mental abilities people usually think of as advanced.

This wrinkled, layered structure is divided into different lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital. Each one is linked to different kinds of work. The frontal lobe is important for planning, decision-making, and control of voluntary actions. The parietal lobe helps process touch and spatial awareness. The temporal lobe is involved in hearing, language, and parts of memory. The occipital lobe mainly processes visual information.

When this part of the brain is damaged, a person may have trouble with speech, understanding, movement, perception, or problem-solving, depending on the area affected. Scientists study it closely because it is central to how mammals, especially humans, understand the world, use language, and manage complex thought. It is not the whole story of the mind, but it is one of the brain's most important systems for learning, perception, and conscious thinking.
