The word natriuretic comes from "natrium," the source of the chemical symbol Na for sodium, and "-uretic," a part that refers to urination. In simple terms, anything described as natriuretic helps the body excrete sodium in the urine. Because water usually follows sodium, this often also reduces the amount of fluid in the body.

In medical language, natriuretic usually refers to substances such as hormones, peptides, or drugs that increase sodium excretion in urine. This sodium loss is often accompanied by water loss, which can lower blood volume and sometimes reduce blood pressure. That is why the term often appears in discussions of heart function, kidney function, swelling, and blood pressure control.

A key example is atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), which is released by the heart when the heart chambers are stretched by increased volume. ANP signals the kidneys to excrete more sodium, helping the body manage fluid balance. Another well-known example is B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), which also has this sodium-losing effect and is commonly measured as a marker in heart failure.

You might also see the term used for medicines. A drug with a natriuretic effect encourages the loss of sodium in urine, usually along with some water. It overlaps with the idea of a diuretic, but the focus here is specifically on sodium excretion rather than urine output alone. Researchers and doctors use the term when talking about treatments for conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, and other problems involving fluid overload.

So, while you probably will not use "natriuretic" in everyday conversation, it is an important word in medicine. It describes the process of helping the body remove sodium, and often extra water, through the urine. When you understand that core idea, the word becomes much easier to recognize in discussions of kidney health, fluid balance, and cardiovascular care.
