Physical conditions such as a cold or allergies can affect resonance and make someone sound stuffy, but that is not quite the same thing. True nasalization involves airflow through the nose during speech. A speaker may use a more nasal tone for style, to imitate an accent, or as part of a regional way of speaking. In the end, it is one of the many ways the mouth, soft palate, and nose work together to shape human speech.
