"Nary" is an old-fashioned way of saying "not one" or "never a." It comes from the older phrase "ne'er a" ("never a"), and it often shows up in stories, regional speech, or writing that wants an older voice. If someone searches everywhere and finds nary a trace, they found nothing at all. You might hear, "He had nary a penny to his name," meaning he was completely broke. It is usually used to stress that something is entirely missing.
"Nary" is a strong negative word meaning "not one," "not a single," or "never a." It is old-fashioned and is not common in formal modern writing, but it still appears in regional speech, fiction, and playful or dramatic narration. It comes from "ne'er a," a reduced form of "never a."
