myocardium

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mˌaɪəkˈɑːdiəm/

US

  • /ˌmaɪəˈkɑrdiəm/

Description

Imagine your heart as a tireless worker, always pushing blood through your body. The myocardium is the strong muscle layer that makes this happen. It is the thick middle layer of the heart wall, and it contracts and relaxes to pump blood. If this muscle becomes inflamed, damaged, or weak, the heart may not work as well as it should. So when doctors talk about protecting the heart, they are often talking about keeping this muscle healthy and working properly.

Examples

  1. 1

    Infection

The infection can spread to the myocardium and make the heart weaker.

  2. 2

After a heart attack, part of the myocardium may be damaged or scarred.
