noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /mˈuː/

  • /ˈmu/

Description

"Mu" is a small word with several very different lives. Most often, it is known as the twelfth letter of the Greek alphabet (Μ, μ). In science and math, the lowercase form, μ, appears in formulas and units, and it is also the symbol for the prefix "micro-," meaning one millionth. In Zen Buddhism, it is famous as an answer in a koan, where it does not simply mean "no." Instead, it pushes back on the question itself and invites a different way of thinking. In English, it is usually pronounced like "mew."
