This means that some cells may carry a specific genetic change while others do not, creating a "mosaic" of genetic information within the body.
This difference usually arises because a genetic mutation happens after fertilization, during early development or later as cells divide. In other words, the change is not present in the original fertilized egg. The extent of mosaicism - how many cells are affected and where they are in the body - can vary greatly. It may be limited to one small area or spread through many tissues.
Mosaicism matters in several fields. In medicine, it helps explain why some people with a genetic change do not show the full severity of a condition - if only some of their cells carry the change, the effects may be milder. It is also important in cancer research, because cancers often contain groups of cells with different genetic changes.
There are different types of mosaicism. Gonadal mosaicism affects egg or sperm cells and can sometimes be passed on to children. Somatic mosaicism occurs in body cells other than egg or sperm cells and is not usually passed on. Knowing which type is present is important for genetic counseling and for estimating risk.
So, while we often think of our genes as fixed, mosaicism shows that genetic variation can arise within a single individual. It highlights how complex development can be and why the same genetic condition can look different from one person to another.
