The word "morbidity" comes from the Latin root morbus, meaning disease. At its core, it refers to illness, poor health, or the presence of disease. In medical writing, it can describe a person's state of illness, but it is especially common in public health and research, where it often refers to how much disease exists in a group or how often it occurs.

For example, researchers might track the morbidity rate of heart disease in a city to understand its effect on the community and decide where health resources are needed most. They might compare morbidity across age groups, regions, or income levels to find patterns and risk factors. In this statistical sense, the word is tied to measures such as incidence, which counts new cases, and prevalence, which counts all existing cases. You will often see it in phrases like "morbidity rate" or "maternal morbidity."

The word can also appear in discussions of complications and suffering caused by a disease or medical condition, not just the disease itself. For instance, a doctor might speak about reducing morbidity after surgery, meaning reducing illness, complications, or lasting health problems.

Outside medicine, there is also a rarer figurative use. It can suggest an unhealthy interest in grim, disturbing, or death-related subjects. Even so, the medical meaning is by far the most important and the most common. So while you would not usually say "I have morbidity" when you catch a cold, the word is very useful when talking about disease burden, public health, and the real-world effects of illness on people and communities.
