The moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is a medium-sized water bird belonging to the rail family, Rallidae. Found in freshwater habitats like marshes, swamps, ponds, and slow-moving rivers across Europe, Asia, and Africa, they are adaptable birds that thrive in areas with dense emergent vegetation. While closely related to the American gallinule, the moorhen is a distinct species of the Old World.

Moorhens aren't particularly graceful fliers—their flight is often described as labored and clumsy, taking off with a distinct whirring sound of wings. However, they are excellent swimmers and divers. Unlike their cousins, the coots, they do not have lobed toes; instead, they possess exceptionally long, slender toes that distribute their weight, allowing them to walk easily over soft mud and floating lily pads. They feed on a varied omnivorous diet of water plants, seeds, insects, snails, and small fish.

What really sets moorhens apart is their striking appearance: mostly dark slate-grey or black plumage with a conspicuous line of white markings on their flanks and white feathers under the tail. Their most unmistakable feature is the bright red shield extending from the base of the yellow-tipped beak over the forehead. Juvenile birds are more camouflaged with a duller, brownish coloration and a dark bill. They build nests that are typically floating platforms woven from reeds and grasses, cleverly concealed within marsh vegetation to protect their chicks.

The term "moorhen" itself derives from the Middle English "more" (meaning marsh or fen), referring to their preference for wetland habitats, combined with "hen" due to their chicken-like profile. While they aren't biologically related to poultry, the name perfectly captures their domestic look in a wild setting.
