In ecology, it often refers to the zone below the alpine area and usually below or around the treeline, depending on the region. It is more specific than simply saying "mountainous." While "alpine" points to the open, treeless area high up on a mountain, montane usually describes the wooded slopes, lower meadows, and valleys below that.

These habitats are shaped by elevation, cooler temperatures, and often wetter conditions than the lowlands nearby. The term can also be used more broadly in geography and environmental writing. A montane landscape suggests forested slopes, ridges, and valleys in a mountain region. It is often contrasted with foothill areas at lower elevations and alpine areas higher up.
