The word monocular has a clear core meaning: it describes something that involves only one eye. Most often, it refers either to vision that depends on one eye or to an optical device that is used with one eye. If a person can see from only one eye because of injury, disease, or another condition, their vision may be described as monocular. Since two eyes normally help the brain judge depth by comparing two slightly different views, monocular vision can make distance and depth harder to judge.

The word is also common for tools. A monocular can be a small telescope or viewing device that you hold up to one eye. In that sense, the word works as both an adjective and, sometimes, a noun. A bird-watcher, traveler, or hiker might carry one because it is smaller and lighter than binoculars. It gives a magnified view, but it does not give the same two-eye depth effect that binoculars do.

There are also rarer and more technical uses. In older or specialized writing, monocular can describe things that have a single opening or a single field of view. Still, the usual meaning stays the same across contexts: one eye, one optical path, or one viewing point. Whether it describes a person's vision or a compact optical instrument, the idea is always focused on seeing through one eye rather than two.
