Pronunciation

US

  • /ˈmɑnəˌkroʊm/

Description

"Monochrome" literally means "one color," but people often use it for black-and-white photos and films. More broadly, it describes an image, design, or style that uses just one color in different shades, or only black, white, and gray. A painting done entirely in shades of blue is monochrome. You could also describe a room in different tones of beige as monochrome, which gives it a calm, unified look. Artists and designers often use this style to draw attention to texture, shape, light, or mood instead of many different colors.
