The word "moll" has changed a lot over time. It began as a familiar form of the female name "Moll" or "Molly," both connected with Mary. Later, though, it took on a much rougher life in slang.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in American slang, "moll" became strongly linked with the world of crime. In this sense, a "moll" was the girlfriend, companion, or sometimes accomplice of a gangster or other criminal. The phrase "gun moll" is even more specific: it usually means a gangster's female companion, often with the suggestion that she is involved in violence or crime as well. This is the meaning most people recognize today, mainly from noir films, detective novels, and stories set around the Prohibition era.

Historically, "moll" was also used as a derogatory slang term for a prostitute. That meaning is now very dated and offensive, but it still matters when you come across older texts or historical material. Because of these older uses, the word often carries a harsh, low-life tone even when it simply means a criminal's girlfriend.

Today, "moll" is rarely used in everyday speech. It sounds distinctly old-fashioned and is usually chosen to create the mood of vintage crime fiction. If you see it in modern writing, it is often there to suggest gangsters, smoky nightclubs, danger, and a world just outside polite society. For example: "The detective watched the boss's moll step out of the car, calm as ever, as if trouble were just part of the evening." The word is useful to know, but mainly as a historical and literary term rather than as part of modern daily English.
