The word mitral almost always appears in medical terminology, specifically relating to the heart. It refers to the mitral valve, one of four valves that ensure blood flows in the correct direction through your heart. Think of it as a doorway between the left atrium (the chamber receiving oxygenated blood) and the left ventricle (the powerful chamber pumping blood out to the body).
