The word "mitogen" comes from the Greek words mitos (thread—referring to the thread-like appearance of chromosomes during cell division) and genos (producing). Essentially, a mitogen is any substance—usually a protein—that stimulates cell division or proliferation, the process by which cells increase in number. It does not directly provide the building blocks for mass; instead, it activates complex signaling pathways within the cell, essentially flipping a molecular switch that says, "Divide!"

Mitogens are incredibly important in several biological processes. In the immune system, they play a vital role in activating lymphocytes (white blood cells) to fight off infections. Scientists often use mitogens in vitro—meaning in a laboratory setting—to stimulate these cells for research purposes.
