ministry

A ministry is often a government department that handles one part of public life, such as education, health, or defense. In many countries, these offices are called ministries, and each one is led by a minister.

The word is also used for religious service and leadership. A pastor, priest, or other faith leader may speak about their ministry, meaning the work they do to guide, teach, and help people. Sometimes the word is also used more broadly for service that feels deeply meaningful and focused on helping others.

The word "ministry" usually moves in two main directions, and both grow out of the idea of service. In public life, it often means a government department with responsibility for one area, such as education, health, finance, or foreign affairs. In many countries, people speak of the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Education, and the person in charge is called a minister.

In religious life, "ministry" means the work of serving, teaching, guiding, or caring for others as part of a faith community. It can describe the role of a priest, pastor, or other religious leader, but it can also describe a particular kind of service, such as youth ministry, prison ministry, or music ministry.
