The word "minim" comes from the Latin minimus, meaning "least." In music, its history goes back many centuries. In modern British usage, it means a half-note, a note that lasts half as long as a semibreve. The name may sound as if it should refer to something tiny, but musical names do not always match modern note values in a simple way, because the system grew over time.

The word also has a second technical life in pharmacy and older measurement systems. There, a minim is a very small unit of liquid volume: one-sixtieth of a fluid dram. In practice, people often explain it as about a drop, though that is only approximate. This use is now mostly historical, but it shows the same idea of exact smallness.

From there, the word can also be used in a broader figurative way for a very tiny amount, especially in literary, formal, or older writing. You might read that someone felt not a minim of regret, or gave only a minim of help. That use is much less common than related words like "minimum," but it still carries a clear sense of something almost too small to notice. Whether it appears in a piece of music, an old medical text, or a careful line of prose, a minim points to something measured, slight, and close to the least possible amount.
