A minicomputer was a class of multi-user computer that emerged in the mid-20th century to fill a crucial niche: providing computational power to organizations that couldn't justify the massive expense or space requirements of a mainframe, yet needed more processing capability than early microcomputers could offer. Emerging in the 1960s, minicomputers were significantly more affordable and consumed far less energy than their predecessors. The term "minicomputer" began to fade in the 1980s and 90s as the "microprocessor revolution" took hold. As personal computers (PCs) became more powerful and affordable, they began to eclipse minicomputers in both performance and cost-effectiveness. Today, the line between servers, high-end workstations, and what was once called a "minicomputer" has blurred. While you won't find machines explicitly labeled as such anymore, their legacy lives on in the architecture of modern servers and the shift toward decentralized computing.
