The term "Midtown" refers to a central part of a city. In many cases, it is the area between downtown and uptown, or simply a busy section near the middle of the city. Not every city has an official area with this name, but the idea is common in many North American cities, especially in New York City with Midtown Manhattan.

As cities grew, these central areas often became important places for business, travel, shopping, and entertainment. A Midtown area may have office towers, hotels, theaters, restaurants, and major transit connections. In many cities, people think of it as a practical meeting point because it is active, well connected, and full of things to do. Atlanta's Midtown is one clear example, and Midtown Manhattan is the best-known one.

The term is not always strictly geographical. Sometimes it describes function as much as location: a place where work, culture, travel, and everyday city life come together. You might read in a travel guide, "Midtown has theaters, shops, and museums," or hear someone say, "The conference will be held at a hotel in Midtown."

While the word often suggests tall buildings and busy streets, the character of such an area can change from city to city. Some Midtown areas are known for older buildings and long local history, while others feel modern and fast-moving. In general, the word brings to mind a lively central district where business, movement, and city energy are strongest.
