Vibratome:* Uses a vibrating blade to cut through fresh or living tissue with minimal damage, making it ideal for neurobiology research. Ultramicrotome:* Equipped with diamond or glass knives to cut sections measured in nanometers, specifically for use in electron microscopy.
The process of preparing a sample often involves embedding it in a supporting medium like paraffin wax or resin to provide the necessary stability for slicing. The resulting sections are placed on slides, stained with specific dyes to highlight cellular structures, and finally analyzed. Without the microtome, our understanding of the microscopic world—from the architecture of a cell to the progression of cancer—would remain largely invisible.
