The term "microenvironment" describes the immediate physical, chemical, and biological surroundings of a cell, organism, object, or system. It focuses on the local conditions in one small area rather than the broader environment. The idea is used in many fields, from biology and ecology to medicine and business.

In biology, a cell's microenvironment includes things like nutrient levels, oxygen concentration, temperature, and signals from nearby cells. These factors strongly affect how the cell behaves. You can think of it as the cell's personal bubble. In ecology, it might mean the damp, shaded area under a rock, the soil around roots, or the conditions inside a rotting log. In medicine, people often talk about the tumor microenvironment, meaning the cells, blood vessels, and chemical signals around a tumor that affect how it grows and how it responds to treatment.

The term also appears in business. A company's microenvironment includes the nearby forces that directly affect it, such as customers, suppliers, competitors, and distributors. These are the people and groups it deals with closely and regularly. This is different from the macroenvironment, which includes much larger forces such as national economic trends, government policy, or global events.
