microalbuminuria

Microalbuminuria means that a small amount of albumin, a protein normally kept in the blood, is found in the urine. Healthy kidneys usually keep almost all albumin in the body while they filter out waste. When the kidney filters start to get damaged, a little albumin can leak into the urine.

This can happen when the small blood vessels in the kidneys are harmed, often from diabetes or high blood pressure. The amount is low enough that an ordinary urine dipstick may miss it, so doctors often use a more sensitive test, such as a urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. In modern medical language, this level is usually called moderately increased albuminuria, but microalbuminuria is still a common older term.

Microalbuminuria usually does not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. That is why it matters: kidney damage can develop quietly for a long time. It is often treated as an early marker of kidney disease, and it can also point to a higher risk of heart and blood vessel problems.

Finding microalbuminuria early gives doctors a chance to act with lifestyle changes, blood pressure control, diabetes treatment, and medicines that can help protect the kidneys. It is especially important for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease risk to be checked regularly. So while the word sounds technical, the idea is fairly simple: it is a small protein leak in the urine that can serve as an early sign that the kidneys need attention.
