Description

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that starts in the thin lining that covers some internal organs, especially around the lungs and the abdomen. It is strongly linked to asbestos exposure, and symptoms often appear many years after a person first came into contact with asbestos. Think of it like this: tiny asbestos fibers can get trapped in the body and slowly damage this lining over time. While rare, it is a serious and aggressive disease. You will often hear about it in legal cases involving workers exposed to asbestos during construction, renovation, or shipbuilding.

The most common type affects the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), but it can also occur in the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma) and, less often, in other areas. It is hard to detect early because symptoms may not appear until the disease is already advanced.
