A megaproject is a very large investment project, usually in infrastructure or public development, that demands huge amounts of money, long-term planning, and coordination across many groups. There is no exact cost that defines it, but the word is often used for projects worth billions of dollars and lasting many years, sometimes even decades.

The term first became common in discussions of major engineering and construction work, but it is now used more broadly. Classic examples include the Panama Canal, the Hoover Dam, and the Interstate Highway System. Today, it can describe high-speed rail systems, giant bridges, ports, airports, power plants, Olympic sites, large urban redevelopment plans, and even some very large technology or energy programs.

These projects are usually led by governments, large companies, or public-private partnerships because they require so much funding and organization. They often involve political debate, legal review, environmental study, land use issues, and public attention. People talk about them not only because they are big, but because they can change economies, travel patterns, housing, and daily life on a wide scale.
